2006 Outdoor Retailer Summer Trade Show Video Interviews

Paul Parker, Product Manager, Garmont Telemark and Ski Mountaineering Boots

October 6, 2006-- Paul Parker had a lot he wanted to talk about at OR this summer, and being a morning person he asked if we could meet 8:00 AM, an hour before the show opens. That's a little early for me, but I was glad I said yes because Paul was in full form, as you will see in the clips we have put together from the more than 60 minutes of tape we rolled. His passion for design, and all the little details that make good products great, has never been more clear.

In part one Paul talks liners, Garmont has new ones this year, he also passes along some terrific boot fitting tips, thermoforming advice, a why and how segment on cuff alignment adjustment, and more.

BD's Thomas Laakso & Dave Mellon

September 28, 2006-- With a 7 or $8 million dollar tele and AT boot program underway and already announced plans to have the their new boot line ready in time to show and take orders at the Winter OR trade show in January, we thought it would be a good time to check in with Dave and Thomas to see how things are coming along. BD's dynamic design duo also revealed that BD will have at least 11 new models of skis to show at the next OR show, and that BD's skis, formerly made in the Atomic factory, are now being manufactured in a new factory in China which BD opened three months ago. According to Mellon, BD's new factory in China will duplicate much of the manufacturiing capability the company already has in its Salt Lake City production facility. In addition, for

awhile now we have been fairly certain that these guys have something up their sleeve that they just don't want to talk about much, that being a "new telemark norm" of their own to go head to head with Rottefella's NTN, which is also due to launch at the next Winter OR show.

We had a good time with this last topic, even though I basically didn't get anywhere with them. When all the bantering and half-hearted denials (or non-denials, depending on how you look at it) in this interview were said and done, we came away feeling no less certain that these guys are well along the path to a fresh new approach of their own to the current long-in-the-tooth telemark boot/binding/ski interface. Only time will tell.

August 28, 2006-- It's always fun to catch up with Alison at the trade shows, or out on the slopes... that is if you can. Always running hot, Gannett is a whirlwind of energy and enthusiasm. Once known mainly for her competitive free skiing and extreme skiing careers, today, in addition to her exploits as a world class climber and ski mountaineer, Alison works with a number of companies, such as Karhu, and Patagonia, helping to design tools for the outdoors specifically geared to women. She's got a lot of opinions and she's not afraid to share 'em. Spend a few minutes getting to know Alison Gannett, one of the true originals on the ski scene today.

August 15, 2006-- Since Ortovox (prematurely as it turned out) debuted its LCD display S1 a year and a half ago at the 2005 Winter OR show, backcountry skiers and snowboarders have been looking forward to seeing a new generation of graphical display transceivers hit store shelves. OR Tradeshow Director Peter Devin

August 14, 2006-- Producing tradeshows such as the huge and very successful Outdoor Retailer Winter and Summer Market shows is no small undertaking. And it's not without its challenges. Manufacturers and retailers depend on Devin to run a smooth show where they can get the work done that is vital to their survival. The outdoor industry as a whole counts on the shows to be both lively and fun as well as tightly focused. In this nearly 12 minute interview Peter Devin addresses a number of topics, including OR's controversial decision to allow Outside Magazine to stage a Hummer test drive event at OR's pre-floor show Open Air Demo.
