August 8,
2010-- As many of you probably
already know, hemp grows like a weed, literally. Germination
to harvest can take as little as three months, and hemp requires
very little water. But did you know that in the age of exploration
ships were powered by canvas sails made from hemp? Or that the
very word "canvas" was derived from "cannabis,"
the latin word for the hemp plant? Do you know that hemp is said
to be five to twenty times as strong as cotton (depending upon
the application), and that hemp is farmed succesfully without
the use of pesticides or herbicides? It has been estimated that
40-50% of all applied pesticides in the world are used to grow
cotton. Did you know that hemp can and has been used to make
everything from clothing to car parts?
These are just some
of the interesting facts and figures we learned in an interview
last week with Richard Dash, a hemp advocate, and the owner/founder
of hemp clothing maker, Dash Hemp. |
