This may seem obvious but it's
important to get comfortable riding pipe before beginning to
try tricks.
A good way to start out is to
ride up the wall, almost straight up. When you get to the top
turn your head and look down the pipe. By doing this you will
spin 180 degrees. Think of catching air even if you don't get
above the lip of the pipe. Avoid carving a turn to change your
direction. This is not something you want to do, but it's instinctual
for long-time skiers just starting out in the park.
As you progress you can take
a less vertical line up the wall, and travel a little further
down the pipe. You should avoid popping or pushing off the wall.
This can cause you to either land on the deck or on the flat
bottom of the pipe itself. Neither of which are good places to
land.
Two very important things to
remember while learning to ride pipe is to first stay balanced
over the balls of your feet as much as possible. Secondly, focus
on trying to be as smooth as possible. Being smooth makes everything
easier. |
