The Finalists In The NET Film Festival, 2005

by Biff Higgison

October 2005-- The judges met and picked the finalists for the telemark film contest. They chose six short films that will now be sent off to be put onto a compilation disk. They will then be shown at the NET Telemark Film Festival where the audience will pick the overall winner.

The finalists (in no particular order):

'Next Season' by Jason Manders

'Next Season' is this years entry by the directors of last years big hit 'Pinhead Hunter'. Although they expressed their dissatisfaction with the contest rules (they wanted to show a much longer version), which they did by the way in an hysterical prologue to the film, their short version will not disappoint their fans. The judges spent at least five minutes cleaning up all the spilt beer after the showing.

'Bigfoot' by Ben Young

'Big Foot' is, ironically, the shortest entry (under five minutes) and goes to prove that less can be more...in more ways than one. The whole film is focused on a skier ripping it up on a pair of bigfoot mini skis mounted with tele bindings.

'Farewell For Now' by Ryan Hayes

'Fairwell for Now' starts with a moving slide show and morphing into some very awesome big mountain skiing. Well shot and a great soundtrack.

'Chasing Home' by Max Mancini & Ben Dolenc

What can you say about this one... just check out some of the skiers..Cody Smith, Josh Madsen, Lorenzo Worster, Ty Dayberry, Decker Jory and of course Max and Ben. The filming and editing is impeccable with a great soundtrack. This one is sure to be a big crowd pleaser.

'Free Up' by Chris Nelson

A great film shot all in Vermont and including some familiar Telemarktips names. Most of the footage is at Smuggs running from the gnarly to the...well, gnarly. Some awesome skiing in a well edited, fast paced film. Bushdr, was that you doing the 360 off the ice cliff?

'Winter of Solos' by Randy Baker

A local Maine entry by one of Maine's true solo artists. All footage is shot by Randy of Randy. It involved a lot of climbing, setting up the camera, skiing and then climbing back up to retrieve the camera. He actually does one shot on the front face of Superior at Alta, skiing down and then climbing back up for the camera. The film has a real down earth quality and a good example of the 'Spirit of Telemark'.

Many thanks to all the contestants and good luck to the finalists at
the film festival.
